Create an Alltop Clone; RSS Aggregator with WordPress

Public RSS Aggregator sites like PopUrls, Alltop and AffBuzz have become popular these days and have been appearing in more niches. If you’d like to build one of these types of site for your niche or maybe as an add-on to your existing site then WordPress can be used as the base for it. This tutorial will be using the Accumulo theme from ProThemeDesign.

Web Hosting

Accumulo is an AllTop-style RSS content aggregator theme that comes with a clean design, custom widgets and custom templates for blogging. Create and monetize your own social media hub with ease.

In this tutorial I will walk you through setting up the theme, This is what the finished site looks like :

Installing the Theme

Once you have purchased the theme, login to your account at Pro Theme Design and the Accumulo theme zip file. In your WordPress admin screen, click “Appearance” > “Themes” > “Install Themes” > “Upload” you will now be presented with an upload box, use this to upload the file.

Once the themes are uploaded, click “Activate” under the Accumulo theme :

Once the theme is activated you will see this message saying to set the tab names and add widgets to the tabs :

Create a Tab

Click the “Set Tab names” and add in at least one tab to start with :

These appear on your homepage along the top, this allows you to have categories of RSS Feeds or other content :

Add your first content Widget

Now that you have your main content tab setup, you can begin adding content to it. To do this, go to “Appearance” > “Widgets” and drag the RSS Feed widget over to right where you will see the tab you created before. Add in the Site name, URL and Feed URL and favicon if you like (the theme will grab this automatically if not). Choose how many items you want to display from the feed and hit save.

Repeat this step for as many sites as you wish to add to your main tab.

Theme Options Panel

When you activated the theme, it added a new menu item called “Accumulo” if you click the sub item called “Options” this will open a new menu up where you can set all kinds of theme options :

The first tab is Theme Settings, here you can set some options such as feed caching, opening links in a new window, a tab to use for an actual blog etc :

The other menu items are :

  • Navigation Settings
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Fonts
  • Thumbnail Settings
  • Analytics
  • Contact Page Settings
  • Admin Branding

This is another nice theme from ProThemeDesign, very easy to install and configure and get an RSS Aggregator up and running with WordPress.

How usefull are these types of sites? Thats another matter – I personally prefer to use my own Feed Reader and get ideas for feeds to follow from RSS Aggregator sites. I am not typical though as you can see these sites are heavily trafficked. If you can promote them well and get returning traffic then monetization should prove to be quite easy using related affiliate links or direct advertising via BuySellAds or similar.
