Optinmonster is a new premium plugin by Syed Balkhi from WPBeginner and Thomas Griffin who created the Soliloquy Slider. It is essentially a new popup plugin to help you build your email list a lot faster, I have been using Pippity here on WPLift for a long time now and whether you like these type of plugins or not, they really work. Syed asked me to take a look at his plugin and see what I thought so I have installed it on WPLift, in this post I will be taking a look at how to use it.
Pricing for Optinmonster starts at $49 for a basic one-site license and goes up to $349 for an ultimate license.
Install The Plugin
Once you have made your purchase, login to the site and you will see a customer area where you can download the plugin and also copy your license key.
Download the plugin as a zip file and then visit “Plugins” > “Add New” > “Upload” and upload the file.
Once you have activated the plugin, you will see a new menu option added called “OptinMonster” – click this and you will be taken to the plugin settings screen which has a number of tabs across the top.
Configure The Plugin
The first thing to do is enter your license key so you can updates when they are released, so visit the “Misc” tab and you will see where to enter the key and click the “Validate License”

Creating an Optin Box
To create an optin box, visit the “Optins” tab and click the “Create New Optin” button and then on the next page you can select what type of optin you wish to create, with the pro version the available types are :
- OptinMonster Light Box
- OptinMonster Footer Optin
- OptinMonster SlideIn Optin
- OptinMonster Exit Intent
Im interested in the Lightbox so thats what I will be creating.
Clicking next takes you to the config options for the Lightbox so you can give it a name, choose a loading delay, cookie length ( so users wont see it again for x days ), and you can choose your email list provider from the following :
- Constant Contact
- Campaign Monitor
- Infusion Soft
So all the main providers are covered, because I use Aweber I had to authorize the plugin with them.
After you have entered your settings, the next page is where you can choose which style of Lightbox popup to use. There are currently 4 different styles.
Customizing the Lightbox
If you choose which you’d like to use and then hit the “Open Design Customizer” button you can now choose what info to put in your Lightbox.
Now you can go to town customizing your lightbox – this part is normally quite annoying but Optinmonster uses a theme customizer approach so all the controls are in a sidebar on the left and changes appear in real time making it a breeze to do. You can choose colors, fonts , enter your text and upload an image here.
When you are done, hit “Save” and then “Close”
Now you have designed it, you need to choose where to display your lightbox. You can display on every page of the site or you can choose where it appears. A nice touch is that if you have custom post types, you can choose which of those to show it on also. So on WPLift I decided not to show it on any of my custom post types ( themes, coupons, hosting etc ).
This is how the lightbox looks on WPLift, I like the result – its more attractive than other similar plugins.
Hats off to Syed and Thomas – they have created a quality product with OptinMonster. Very easy to setup and customize – the theme customizer style editor was really a pleasure to use so you should be able to get good results with it. Not mentioned above is the fact you can do split testing as well so you can see which lightbox performs better and there is also a stats section.
Check this plugin out if you are looking for an easy to use lightbox plugin to help boost your signups.
