On December 11, 2023, WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg delivered his annual State of the Word keynote at the first international event in Madrid, Spain. The event was live-streamed to millions of WordPress enthusiasts around the world and featured nearly 200 contributors, developers, extenders, and friends of the Project.

Matt shared his excitement about the event and honored the Spanish WordPress community for hosting it. He also reflected on the notable moments of 2023, such as:

  • The project’s 20th-anniversary celebrations
  • The evolution of WordPress software and features
  • The growth and diversity of the WordPress community
  • The launch of new resources on WordPress.org, such as Events page, Showcase, Remembers memorial, and Openverse
  • The demo of WordPress Playground and Twenty Twenty-Four default theme

Matt also passed the microphone to Matías Ventura, Lead Architect of Gutenberg, who showcased some of the most interesting aspects of collaborative editing in WordPress. He invited contributors to test a prototype in the Gutenberg plugin and share their feedback.

The event was a success and a testament to the power and potential of WordPress as an open source project that empowers people to create and share content on any platform.
