7 Best WordPress FAQ Plugins to Add Passive Customer Support to Your Website

Last Updated on December 26th, 2023

Many website owners often ask, “How do I add FAQ in WordPress?” In today’s article, I will explain the easiest way to add them to your site manually, plus I will go over some WordPress FAQ plugins that will do it for you.

Why Should I Have WordPress FAQ Plugin on My Site?

There are many advantages to having FAQs on your site, especially when selling products or services. Typical advantages include:

Visitors can obtain answers to their questions and concerns quickly and without having to contact you.

People are often reluctant to contact a company for further information, especially in the early stages of the buying process. In fact, they are more likely to buy from a site that answers all their questions and concerns than from one that leaves them wondering.

Waste less time repeatedly answering the same questions.

Having FAQs on your site is basically a form of passive customer service. Visitors can get answers to their questions themselves, so you don’t have to spend time manually replying to the same questions over and over.

Having answers to pertinent questions can build trust.

FAQs help reassure visitors about whatever you are offering on your site. It shows that you know your products and services, and it also demonstrates that you have considered the customer’s concerns. All that makes your site, you, and your company more trustworthy in their eyes.

FAQs offer site visitors a better user experience and can boost SEO.

FAQs can significantly increase engagement by retaining people on your site for longer. Visitors are happy when they can easily find answers to their questions and are more likely to browse the site further. Google will notice when visitors are more engaged, and that can help with your search engine ranking.

FAQs aren’t just for eCommerce-type websites. For example, you may have a charity site with FAQs answering things like what the charity does, where it operates, and how it manages donations. Similarly, you may have FAQs on a blog site that answer common questions relating to the blog content.

How Do I Add FAQs in WordPress Without Plugins?

It is possible to add FAQs using code. This offers a potential advantage because if Google likes what you have done, it may generate an enhanced search result listing with the FAQs directly below your website entry. However, as not everyone is comfortable with coding, I will leave that method for another time. Besides, it will need an entire article of its own.

Therefore, I will tell you about the easiest method of adding FAQs to a site, namely using a regular WordPress page dedicated to them. The procedure for this is precisely the same as when creating any other page:

  • Go to your WordPress dashboard, go to the ‘Pages’ section, then click ‘Add New.’
  • Enter a title for the page, for example, ‘FAQs,’ ‘Frequently Asked Questions,’ ‘Common Questions,’ or ‘Your Questions Answered.’
  • Enter your list of questions and answers in the content area. Bullet points are a neat way of presenting them. Also, putting the questions in bold font and the answers in regular helps to separate them visually.
  • Once you are happy with the look for your FAQ page, click ‘Publish.’
  • Next, you need to add it to your menu, so go to ‘Appearance’ in the WordPress dashboard and choose the ‘Menus’ option.
  • Select your top menu from the dropdown list (if you just have one menu, it should default to that, and there will be no dropdown list).
  • Your newly created FAQ page should now be present in the ‘Pages’ section. Click the checkbox next to it, and press ‘Add to Menu’ to transfer it to the ‘Menu Structure’ section. In there, you can drag the FAQs to reposition them to where you want them to appear in the menu.
  • Save the menu using the ‘Save Menu’ button.

You should now have a new item in your website’s menu for your FAQs – a click on that will take you to your FAQs page. Easy, right?

What Is The Best FAQ Plugin for WordPress?

I think using a WordPress FAQ plugin is the best way to add FAQs to a site. However, there are plenty available, so choosing an overall ‘best’ is difficult. Each has its own merits and annoyances, plus cost can be a factor for some.

Therefore, I have collated seven of the best that are currently available. You should be able to find one that suits you perfectly. All work with WordPress 5.8.2, and the developers update them regularly.

Accordion FAQ

Accordion FAQ WordPress faq plugin

I’m kicking off with Accordion FAQ simply because it is one of the most popular FAQ plugins. It has over 50k active downloads from WordPress alone, where it has an average user score of 4.6/5.0.

Accordion FAQ is a freemium plugin that presents your questions and answers in an accordion format. That means the answers expand and contract beneath the questions individually, thereby minimizing screen clutter. In my opinion, that is the most attractive way of presenting them.

Features you will get with the free version of Accordion FAQ include:

  • Easy-to-use, intuitive user interface
  • Unlimited color schemes
  • WYSIWYG editor
  • Collapse mode
  • Unlimited shortcodes
  • Widget option
  • Drag and drop API

That’s pretty good for a free plugin and would be a great starting point for many sites. Upgrading to Pro costs just $9 for a single website and adds many handy extras:

  • Four background overlays, 20 accordion templates, and 12 open/close icons
  • Animations
  • Google fonts
  • Scroll and hover effects
  • Border customization
  • Preview option
  • Six months updates and support

A lifetime plan that covers unlimited sites is also available for a one-off price of $27.

Accordion FAQ is straightforward to set up, allowing you to create attractive FAQs on your site quickly.

Ultimate FAQ

Ultimate FAQ WordPress faq plugin

Ultimate FAQ is another very popular plugin, with more than 30k active downloads from WordPress and a 4.6/5.0 star rating. Creating and adding FAQs to WordPress is made super-simple thanks to a Gutenberg block or shortcode. The plugin works by leveraging the WordPress custom post type.

Like Accordion FAQ, Ultimate FAQ is a freemium plugin, with the free version providing the following features:

  • Create unlimited FAQs, tags, and categories
  • FAQ Gutenberg block and shortcode to place the FAQs exactly where you want them
  • Accordion layout
  • Device responsive
  • FAQs can be ordered, sorted, and grouped
  • Translation ready
  • Bulk import FAQs from a spreadsheet
  • Custom CSS

Useful features indeed, in my opinion, and one to try if you are after a free option.

The premium version of Ultimate FAQ is quite a bit more expensive than Accordion FAQ. For a single domain, you will pay $47, which rises to $197 for ten sites. However, for those prices, you do get the following extra features:

  • WooCommerce FAQs on product pages
  • Search function with autocomplete
  • Advanced styling options
  • Fifteen toggle icon sets
  • Social media sharing
  • Animations
  • Drag and drop re-ordering
  • User question submission form with admin notifications
  • Custom fields
  • Export FAQs to spreadsheet or PDF
  • Six months updates and support
  • Free 7-day trial available

I suggest starting with the free version first, and if you like it, consider investing in the premium version for the extra features it adds. Of course, do take advantage of the free trial first, though, just to make sure premium is what you need.

Knowledge Base for Documentation and FAQs

Knowledge Base for Documentation and FAQs

Knowledge Base for Documentation and FAQs is not a dedicated FAQ plugin in the traditional sense. Instead, you can use it to build an online self-service knowledge base for your site visitors, and of course, that is essentially what an FAQ section is.

This is a free plugin, but don’t let that fool you, as it comes with an extensive feature list. Expect to get the following key ones, plus a whole lot more:

  • Add unlimited accordions on the same page with unique settings for each
  • Simple to use visual editor
  • 26 pre-made templates, including FAQs
  • Wide range of colors, styles, font, and layout options
  • Basic, tabs, and category-focused layouts
  • Auto-generated table of contents that can be floating or sticky
  • Search bar with listed results
  • Unlimited articles, users, and categories
  • Shortcode for FAQs
  • Device responsive
  • Works with most popular page builders

Some bundles of addons are available also. Those add extra layouts, widgets, advanced searches, etc., and cost between $46 and $170 for the first year. To be honest, I think the free version will suffice for FAQs.

Knowledge Base for Documentation and FAQs scores 5.0/5.0 with WordPress users. Over 10k active downloads of the free version alone are in existence.

Flexible FAQs

 Flexible FAQs WordPress faq plugin

Flexible FAQs is the new kid on the block in this list, having been around for just over a year. That means it doesn’t yet have a significant following, but it does have a 5.0/5.0 rating in the WordPress plugins directory.

Even in its free form, Flexible FAQs integrates with WooCommerce so that you can create product FAQs. What’s more, it uses drag and drop, so re-ordering your questions and answers is simple. Some other key features of the free version include:

  • Create unlimited FAQs and display them anywhere.
  • Preview FAQs before publishing
  • Three built-in templates: text, box, and accordion
  • Each template supports multiple themes
  • Device responsive
  • Compatible with page builder plugins
  • Full FAQ Schema support

Premium upgrades cost $49/year for a single site, $119 for three, and $275 for unlimited domains. Those prices add plenty of extra features, for example:

  • More than 100 pre-made themes
  • Custom FAQ theme manager with more customization, formatting, styling, and visibility options
  • Build your own FAQ themes or customize a pre-made one
  • Create new posts or pages with FAQs embedded directly from the editor
  • Individual FAQ items can be enabled or disabled easily
  • Single-click FAQ set duplication
  • Sample FAQs included
  • Bulk editing
  • Real-time statistics
  • Schema caching for faster page loading
  • Updates and support

If you are happy to give a relatively new plugin a try, I’d say Flexible FAQs looks to be a safe option. However, as always, start with the free version first, upgrading only if the plugin fits your needs.
