Standard Theme is a really attractive and clean personal blogging theme by the guys at 8BIT, I have been a fan of the minimal design since I first saw it – its perfect for bloggers who want to let their content do the talking and it also makes use of Twitter’s Bootstrap. The theme is available for self-hosted sites for $99 and also on WordPress.com for $69. In this review I will be taking a look at the WordPress.com version.
Once you have activated the theme:
You will see a theme options menu item added under “appearance” if you visit this you will see two tabs: one for layout and one for social options. The layout tab lets you choose which side to place the sidebar or you can choose to not have one at all :
The Social Options tab has space for you to put the URLs the following accounts : Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Vimeo and Youtube:

A handy feature of this theme is the post formats in provides, you can choose to post a standard blog post, status, image, link, quote or video and the theme will format them appropriately :
For example, if you choose the “quote” format it will display like this :
Choosing “video” and simply pasting a youtube video URL will correctly embed the video and with display like this :
I tested the WordPress.com version of this plugin – I believe there are a few more features in the stand alone version but this is restricted by the nature of the WP.com system.
As I mentioned before I love the look of this theme – its minimal and allows for a lot of customisation using custom header image and custom backgrounds which is built-in to WordPress. I would like to have seen a few more options on the theme options panel, such as font choice and maybe a color picker – this isnt a huge deal though and easy enough to edit yourself if you know a little CSS. I liked the post formats – perfect for the blogger who uses multimedia rather than just posting text blog posts all the time.
All in all this is a tidy little theme, if you run a personal blog and want a clean minimal look then give it a go.
