A new theme company launched the other day, named “ChurchThemes.com” it provides ( you guessed it! ) WordPress themes for churches. It was founded by Steven Gliebe who blogged a bit about his new business here. What I like about ChurchThemes.com is the free plugin you can download from the repository to create your own church websites. He isnt tying his customers in with lots of custom shortcodes etc that will be lost if you change themes, I recommend you check them out and download the free plugin.
In this post I will be taking a look at the plugin and looking at what other options there are for building a church website with WordPress.
Church Theme Content – Free Plugin
Essentially what the Church Content plugin does is register a few custom post types and taxonomies which are tailored towards running a Church website. It will add functionality to your WordPress theme for :

- Events
- People
- Locations
Once you have activated this plugin you can begin adding content but to display it you will need a theme compatible with it, which means either creating your own ( developer docs here ) or purchasing a compatible theme from ChurchThemes.com

Thank you for sharing about what we’re doing with churchthemes.com. We’re hoping other church theme developers will take advantage of our plugin so users can switch themes with minimal trouble. For now Resurrect is the first and only theme that uses it but we’re at this full-time so will be releasing more compatible themes over the next few months.
Just a note that we do business as “churchthemes.com”. There’s another church theme shop at churchthemes.net with the name of “ChurchThemes” and we don’t want there to be confusion between the brands.
