Just as WordPress democratized online publishing, allowing anyone to share their thoughts and ideas online for free in just a few clicks, Udemy aims to do the same with online learning.

This growing eLearning platform allows anyone to register as an instructor and then upload their own course, on pretty much any topic. As you would expect from a piece of software that powers almost 25% of all websites, there are plenty of courses on Udemy covering how to use WordPress – from creating your first post, right through to developing your own themes and plugins.

However, today we are going to be taking a look at a course that aims to teach you how to quickly build a customized ecommerce store using WordPress and the WooCommerce online store builder plugin.

The Goal of the Course

The full title of this course is ‘Install Storefront WordPress Theme + Integrate WooCommerce’. This should give you a good idea of the goal of this course: teaching you how to build your own online store using WordPress.

All the software, themes, and plugins used in the course are free. This means that apart from the price of this course, the cost of a domain name and web hosting, you can get your online store ready for business with very little financial outlay.

The course has been created by Susan Cork, a freelance designer and front-end web developer with 15 years of experience in the field.  Susan now specialises in working with WordPress and creating eCommerce websites for her clients. This helps make her perfectly positioned to teach this topic to others.

Who is this WordPress Udemy Course Aimed At?

The course is aimed at beginners and those that are new to creating websites. So whether or not you’ve used WordPress, or worked on an eCommerce store before, you should be able to get started straight away and have a fully functioning online shop up and running by the end of the program.

Whether you want to build an online store for your offline business, you want to sell a few of your own digital products online, or you are starting your own eCommerce business, this course aims to give you all the information you need to succeed.

Furthermore, if you are a web designer and would like to start creating eCommerce solutions for your clients, then this course will give you all the necessary skills to be able to start offering this service.

However, if you are experienced with WordPress eCommerce websites, or you are a WordPress developer, you don’t fall into the target audience of this course and should look elsewhere to expand your knowledge.

Learn WordPress and WooCommerce

What Does the Course Cover?

The course starts at the very beginning of the process. The first module is focused on helping you assess your eCommerce needs and create a plan of action for your website. This is great as it will help you get clear on what the purpose of your store is, and what you want to get out of this course.

Once the technical lessons begin, you will learn how to install WordPress using your host’s cPanel, as well as the free, but fully featured Storefront theme. The course then goes on to teach you how to set up your store to resemble the demo version of the theme and populate your website with WooCommerce online store demo content.

The course also covers how to personalize your website. This includes adding custom content, and uploading your logo. You will also learn how to create a child theme to safeguard and future proof your customizations – an essential part of any WordPress website build.

The course then goes on to cover using page builder tools to create custom layouts, installing and using a content slider plugin, and how to add a blog to your online store. In addition to all of the above, the course covers how to create a staging server and sub-domain for your website. This then enables you to work on your website without editing the live version directly.

Before you dive into a course on Udemy – or anywhere else for that matter, it’s a good idea to establish what format the learning will take, and what materials you get access to. We all have preferred ways of learning. So in order to get the most from any course, it’s important to see if it matches your optimal learning style.

What Format Does the Course Take?

Thankfully this eCommerce course covers a few different formats to help cater to a range of learning styles. While the main course content is delivered via video tutorials, there is also an eBook included in the package, and quizzes at various stages in the program.

The main course content comprises of over 38 lectures, which have been grouped into seven sections. These sections are then broken down into a number of shorter lectures. In total, the course spans 5.5 hours of content.

This modular format means you get access to a series of short and concise lessons, rather than long and sprawling lectures. By taking this approach, the course instructor makes it easy to dip in and out of the content at your leisure, checking off lessons as you go, without losing your place in the program.

You can pause and restart any of the video lessons as necessary, and the Udemy interface is very easy to get started with.  While you can’t download any of the videos for offline viewing, each of the lectures is accompanied by a text description.

You can also start a discussion on any of the modules, for further clarification.  Udemy gives you the ability to add your own notes in the sidebar of each video lesson. This is great for jotting down your thoughts, without having to switch windows or take your eyes and ears off of the lecture.

The quizzes that are dotted through the course give you a good opportunity to recap what you’ve just covered and check you are understanding the course content.

Does This WordPress eCommerce Online Course Deliver?

Udemy in itself is a very user friendly learning platform and this works in this course’s favour. Its success has meant its founders have been able to focus on continually refining the user experience to make it as easy to use as possible.

When it comes to getting started with this eCommerce course, you have the option of taking a tour of the program to help you understand the lay of the land. You can quickly view the topics for each of the 38+ lessons and see their length. This is useful as it helps you to plan your study schedule. Perhaps you will watch three lessons a day, or spend one hour on the course at a time, for example.

Once you get started, you can watch the short videos that make up the course. The audio and video quality of these lessons is very high quality. The format is a mixture of slideshows, video presentations, and screencasts. Each lesson includes a voice over that is easy to understand and follow. This is thanks to the clear pronunciation and measured pace of the instructor.

The step by step tutorial sections of course, such as installing WordPress via cPanel, installing the WooCommerce plugin and Storefront theme, and then configuring your website, are all easy to follow and recorded at a nice pace. As you can go back and replay the videos as many times as needed, you should have no trouble keeping up.

This WordPress Udemy course also includes quizzes throughout the various sections. This can help reinforce what you’ve just learned, and ensure you’ve taken the information in. At the end of the course you can use the checklist to ensure that you’ve completed all the necessary steps for your website. You can also download the Storefront user manual eBook for more detailed information.

Overall, this course definitely delivers on its objective of teaching you how to build an online store using WordPress, WooCommerce, and the Storefront theme, with some nice additional lessons on top of that.

Conclusion

Using WordPress to build an online store has many advantages, compared to using a hosted service. While there might be more work involved upfront, such as installing software, and configuring WordPress; having complete control over your website and ‘owning’ your store and customer records is a big plus point in favour of WordPress – not to mention the lack of recurring monthly fees to use the software.

There is plenty of free content online covering the different aspects of creating an online store with WordPress. However, if you want everything together in one easy to access format, that takes you from the very beginning, to the very end, then this Udemy course is a great option.

It’s worth pointing out again that this course isn’t aimed at advanced users. So if you want to learn how to create a custom eCommerce theme, manually install WordPress on your servers, and optimize the software and database, then this definitely isn’t the course for you. However, if you want to know how to use free, off-the-shelf software to sell items online, then this course covers all the steps of the process.

As choosing this course gives you lifetime access to the learning materials, as well as access to future updates and revisions, you will have an evolving resource to turn to for building your first store, and any others you start in the future.

With a 30-day, no questions asked, money back guarantee on offer, you really have nothing to lose when it comes to building an online store with this course.

  1. Kate H

Many thanks for the great review of Susan Cork’s Install Storefront WordPress Theme + Integrate WooCommerce course.

After reading the review I am going to take up your offer to get it for $15 as it sounds just what I am looking for.

Even though I am an experienced WordPress user and have created a couple of basic themes for my own use I am a complete novice when it comes to ecommerce.

After doing a ton (probably too much) research I had settled on using WooCommerce and one of their free themes.

Many thanks again for not only a great review but a great website with interesting content.

  2. Thanks a lot for putting up this review, Joe. Yes, I agree that there are a lot of content on the web that teaches you how to set up an ecommerce store with WordPress, but none of them are complete or doesn’t have every info covered. This course really seems to be very informative, will surely give it a shot. Thanks :)
