DesignModo Startup Framework for WordPress: Visual Theme Editing & Page Builder

A while ago we reviewed the Startup Framework by DesignModo which allowed you to create really nice looking websites for businesses, they have now released a WordPress theme version which has drag and drop and a visual editor so we’re going to take a look at how it works and what sort of sites you can create with it.

How it Works

The theme contains over 100 blocks from which you can choose to create your site, blocks are how you configure the look of the website you are creating. Once you have downloaded and activated the theme you will see a new menu item called “SFW Pages” which is where you will setup the blocks and customize the site appearance. To begin, create a new page and then click the “Visual Editor” button.

Create a Page

Once the visual editor loads you will see down the left hand side a number of links for sections of the site:

  • Headers
  • Contents
  • Price Tables
  • Projects
  • Contacts
  • Crew
  • Footers

If you hover over the header section you will see 23 different header styles to choose from, selecting one will load it up in the main view window.

If you visit the main view, you will then see that you can edit it in the window – highlighting text allows you to change it, you can upload images and change colors of the elements on the page.

Visual Editor

The process of building a page is super simple – it’s just a case of adding more content blocks till you get the desired layout – once you have your content blocks added you are able to drag them to re-arrange the order

Content Block

Once you have the page looking how you want, you can click the “Preview” button and it will show you your page :

If you have designed a homepage, its then just a case of setting this to display as home, under “Settings” > “Reading” > “Display Static Homepage” and choose the page you created.

Pricing of this theme starts at $149 which allows you to use on one website, receive 1 year of updates and email support. You can get 3 licenses for $249 and 5 licenses for $349. The licensing policy is more restrictive than most WordPress themes which use a GPL license so you should read what you can and cant do carefully before making your purchase.

I have tested out many of these visual theme builders and page editors and I have to say this is one of the very best – It’s seriously easy to use so that anyone should be able to create a nice looking website without any coding knowledge and with the built-in 100 blocks you should be able to create exactly what type of layout you need.

The design of all the elements is absolutely spot-on – very clean and modern design, you can tell this is a quality product designed by a good designer.

At the price point of $149 per website it is considerably more expensive than most themes but I would say its worth it – for that price you can create unlimited page designs, customize them to fit your needs and edit the colors and elements to fit your companies branding it will save you money over buying a more regular priced theme and having to hire a freelancer to customize it for your needs.

If the price-point and more restrictive license works for you, then I recommend you check out this theme as it’s a high-quality product.
