The WordPress eCommerce plugin market is currently very well served by the likes of WooCommerce, JigoShop and WP e-Commerce but the area is big business so there are more and more and more companies starting to offer eCommerce products.
One such company is MiwiSoft who have been creating extensions for the Joomla CMS for over 5 years, one of their products MiwoShop has just been ported over to WordPress which is what we will be taking a look at today.
Installation & Setup
Once you have uploaded and activated the plugin, it creates a page for you which acts as the shop, you can also choose which page to place the shop on yourself by creating a page and adding this shortcode :
You will see the plugin has added a new menu item named “MiwoShop” which contains the dashboard for your shop and all the different settings.
The main dashboard is easy to use with large visual icons for each section and these are also accessible down the side of the main WP admin:
Products and categories are where you will want to visit first to begin adding items to your store, if you visit the products link first you will see a couple of test products have been added for you.
Article continues after this block
You can then click through to edit these and see the many options for each product such as :
- General – This covers the product name, description and tags
- Data – This is price, SKU, weight, Tax Class, ISBN etc
- Links – Manufacturer, Category, Related Products
- Attribute – Add custom attributes
- Option – If you have different types of a product, ie colors then add them here
- Discount – To mark down a product for groups
- Special – To run a special offer on an item
- Image – Upload the product images
- Reward Points – Enable here to give rewards points on an item
- Design – To change the design for an item
- Integration – To use with other products
From the dashboard you also have access to all the other areas you would need with an eCommerce site you can view orders, customers, manage add-ons, setup your payment system, customer reviews and so on.
The default front-end theme which ships with MiwoShop is quite a basic but functional layout so it is recommend you use this as a base and add your own branding, colors and other touches to make it more unique to you. You can view a demo of it here.
There are a number of other themes available on their site for purchase, but it isn’t clear whether these are for Joomla or WordPress.
The plugin compares favourably to other eCommerce plugins available, it has everything you need to get a decent store up and running and a large amount of payment gateways, modules and extensions as the plugin has been under development for the Joomla platform for many years. You can see the full list of features here, or check out some of the highlights :

As I mentioned earlier, there is a free “Lite” version you can download and try out, this will allow you to install the plugin and configure it but does not include any payment gateways, theme editor, shipping methods etc. So essentially to use this plugin on a live site you will to purchase the next package up which is the “Pro 6” plan for $59 and includes all the features and a 6 month subscription. You can see the rest of the plans here, the plugin is charged on a time-based plan so you will need to decide which would work out best for you.
MiwoShop seems like quite a mature eCommerce product because it has a head-start being ported over from Joomla. I have tried out numerous eCommerce systems personally and this plugin has everything covered – from testing this out as a demo it seems likely you could use this to run a successful live online store. It has good support for add-ons such as different payment processors, live chat, slideshows, best-sellers etc.
While the default theme is not amazing, it looks quite easy to customize and I like the fact there is an add-on store which sells more themes. There is a solid reporting area which allows you to run many different types of sales reports, product reports and customer reports. The plugin also has a full affiliate system built-in which is always good to have to help drive more sales.
If you are looking for an eCommerce system, MiwoShop is a new plugin to add to your list to check out and see if it is right for you – with a free version to download I recommend you take a look at what it has to offer.
