    Your WordPress Product

We all know that adding buttons for social media which allows your users to share your content easily, increases shares and helps your best content get spread virally. Unfortunately one of the downsides to adding these buttons is that they all slow your page down as they are loading in javascript and images from other sites – if there is a delay with one of these services then that also causes a delay on your site.

That’s where a new plugin from Godaddy comes in, called “Lazy Social Buttons” it is a free plugin which loads images for Google+, Facebook and Twitter – only when the user hovers over one of these buttons does it actually load in the real button. You might have seen this done on sites like Techcrunch and now you can add it to your site.

Install The Plugin

Download the plugin, then in your WordPress admin, visit “Plugins” > “Add New” > “Upload” and upload the file.

Activate the plugin and underneath it’s name you will see the “settings link” click that or visit “Settings” > “Discussion” to set up the plugin.

Configure the Plugin

The settings are pretty basic for this plugin – simply choose whether to display the buttons before or after your content and they get automatically inserted. Then you can choose which services to enable – Google+, Twitter, Facebook Like and Facebook Share.

Test on Front End

Once you have saved your settings, visit a post on your site to see the plugin in action. To start with they look like this :

And then after a mouse-over causes them to load :

This is a nice and simple plugin to install and configure and this is the first version of it so I expect it to become a bit more involved. My suggestions are as follows – give it its own settings page, Its currently under “discussion” and  I dont think it really belongs here. The other thing is more services need to be added – the basics are there but Id like to have things like pinterest, stumbleupon, linkedin – these could be easily added and would start to provide some competition for more advanced plugins like DiggDigg which is what I use here on WPLift.

Good suggestions, will add more social icons in coming weeks, and own settings page too. Would also like to add option for displaying # of +1s and Tweets, as well as an option for making it load automatically after X seconds, instead of onMouseOver

Thank you for this awesome plugin. I think TechCrunch uses a similar logic. So does the default theme in Blogger!
