I have created a new plugin called “A Better Planet” which is simply a news widget for your WordPress dashboard intended to take the place of the default Planet WordPress feed. Inspired by this post on WPMU by James Farmer titled “The WordPress Planet is Pants – and here’s how to improve it“. I don’t often agree with James Farmer but this post struck a chord with me – I have long thought it’s a little unfair that the prominent news feed which is displayed on every WordPress install is so out of date and broken.

There are a good number of blogs about WordPress which deserve to be included but are never given the chance for whatever reason and there remains so many sites on the list that haven’t updated in ages or contain a lot of content unrelated to WordPress.

My attempt to provide a solution is A better Planet, a free plugin you can download and install which will provide a dashboard widget with latest new from more relevant and fresh sources

To start off with I have manually selected 30 of my favorite sources to be included which I think are of high quality and provide up to date WordPress news, tutorials and resources. Part of the reason I dislike the planet feed is that no one knows who is in charge of it or how you can get your site accepted on there. With A Better Planet I have decided to accept submissions for any site to be placed on the master feed and once a month I will hold a vote and the top two sites will be added, you can submit your site as many times as you like – sound fair enough ?

So who is currently on the list ?

Official Feeds

WordPress Blogs

I decided against including any blogs for WordPress companies as although they can provide good content, that could quickly turn sour with spam and so on.

So who have I blatantly forgotten ?! Nothing personal if I have, built this thing fairly quickly today so let me know in the comments or drop me a line and I will include them in the vote for next month.

  1. neat! apparently you didn’t agree fully with james as you’ve included feeds that he recommended NOT including, right?

  2. I think this is a great step in the right direction, Oli thank you for taking the time to write this Widget.

  3. Good idea. I was thinking of doing the same thing, but perhaps I don’t need to anymore.

    Thanks for including us Oli.

  4. Definitely dig this. I was thinking only in the last week or two how crap the WordPress Planet feed is and this is a huge leap in the right direction. Appreciate the inclusion ;)

  5. Oh, and I think Pippin’s Plugins should definitely be added to the list

  6. Great plugin Oli. I usually hides the default news since most of the times I found it is irrelevent to WordPress. WPmail.me has been one of my favorite WP resources for years :)

  7. Oli – nice work! Thanks so much for including my feed. Honored. Really appreciate that.

  8. Thanks for including us Oli!

  9. Sweet, good stuff, tweeted!

I think partial agreement is wonderful :)

  10. Great work, Oli.

Thanks so much for including WPKube =). Much appreciated.

  11. It’s a really good idea, and necessary. How do you made the multi feed, I would like to make a spanish version of the plugin but the usual aggregators doesn’t work fine.

  12. It looks like you have covered almost all feeds I have in feedly. :) I can just add a couple of more sites in the plugin and uninstall feedly extension from chrome.

  13. I should be kicking myself for learning about this plugin after such a long time.

    Amazing idea mate!

  14. Ozh

FYI I tried twice to post a comment here and it didn’t work, no feedback, no error message.

  15. How about adding the Logo images of all websites next to the date in dashboard widget so it will be more usable to see from where the update comes.

  16. Nice idea, installed on a local install just for the latest feed, such a sweet idea Oli

  17. Aj

    Good stuff dude!
